Small aluminium boats can look interchangeable in advertisements while differing sharply in hull shape, metal thickness, freeboard, internal layout and trailer quality. Decide whether the boat is a tender, car topper, estuary fishing boat or general family runabout before comparing prices.

Match the hull to the water

A flat or shallow punt is stable and efficient on sheltered water. More deadrise improves the ride in chop but usually adds weight, draft and power demand. Buying the tougher-looking hull is not automatically an upgrade if the boat must be lifted or car-topped every trip.

Compare packages line by line

A package price may include a basic trailer and manual-start outboard while the display boat carries upgrades. Ask for the exact engine model, trailer rating, registration costs, safety gear and dealer preparation in writing.

  • Hull and factory options
  • Outboard, controls, propeller and first service
  • Trailer, tie-downs, spare wheel and registration
  • Battery, fuel system and electronics
  • Freight, dealer preparation and delivery date

New versus used

Used aluminium dinghies can be excellent value because the structure is visible and repairable. Inspect welds, keel wear, transom movement, corrosion around dissimilar metals and the trailer as carefully as the hull. A cheap boat on an exhausted trailer is not a cheap package.

Questions to put in writing

  • Is the hull pressed or welded, and what material thickness is used?
  • What is the legal capacity and maximum transom weight, not only maximum horsepower?
  • What exactly is included in the boat-motor-trailer package?
  • Can the boat be launched, recovered or car-topped by the intended crew?
  • What dealer, hull and trailer warranty support is available locally?

A useful quote identifies the exact model and configuration, every included item, all unavoidable delivery or preparation charges and the expected delivery timing. If two quotes do not include the same things, the headline prices are not comparable.

Frequently asked questions

What size tinny is easiest to handle?

A 3.0–3.7 m open boat is common for simple transport and sheltered-water use. Crew, launching method, payload and local conditions matter more than a universal ideal length.

Pressed or welded aluminium?

Pressed boats are often lighter and less expensive. Welded construction generally suits harder duty, but quality, hull design and plate thickness still need to be compared.

Should I buy a package or rig the boat myself?

A dealer package simplifies compatibility and warranty. Separate purchases can be worthwhile when you already own a suitable engine or need a specialised trailer or fit-out.
