30-second answer
Safe working load is only the beginning: arm spacing, lift angle, centre of gravity and movement at sea determine whether a tender package works.

Davit Ratings vs Complete Installations
A davit marked for 150 kg does not automatically make every 140 kg tender package suitable. The rating assumes a particular installation, load path and operating condition. Arm spacing, reach, mounting structure, tackle angle and the tender's centre of gravity can all change the loads carried by individual components.
Treat the tender, davits, backing structure, lifting points and restraints as one system. The lowest verified limit governs the system—not the largest number printed on any one part.
Static Dinghy Weight vs Dynamic Loads
A tender hanging quietly in a marina creates a static load. At sea it can surge, swing and slam. Those accelerations can create short-duration loads well above the scale weight, particularly when the tender is carried low or is not restrained against fore-and-aft movement.
This is why operating instructions, sea-state limits and a conservative working margin matter. A calculator can expose an obviously overloaded combination; it cannot certify an installation.
How to Measure Dinghy Davit Geometry
- Record arm spacing and the distance between the tender's rated lifting points.
- Check whether falls remain close to vertical or pull the boat inward at an angle.
- Locate the ready-to-use centre of gravity with the actual engine, fuel and equipment aboard.
- Confirm clearance from the water, transom, rails and exhaust at every stage of the lift.
- Verify the yacht structure and backing plates with the davit installer or vessel designer.
Davit Installation Records and Load Verification
Ask for a written installed rating, permitted operating conditions, inspection schedule and instructions for securing the tender at sea. Photograph the final rig and record the weight assumptions. If the package later gains a larger outboard, battery or console, rerun the entire calculation rather than subtracting from an old guess.
Frequently asked questions
Is a 10% margin enough?
There is no universal margin that certifies every davit system. Follow the davit and vessel documentation and obtain professional advice for the installed geometry and intended sea conditions.
Can lifting points be added to any RIB?
No. Lifting points must transfer load through structure designed for it. Use builder-approved points or a professionally engineered solution.
Should fuel stay in the tender?
Removing a portable tank can reduce hanging weight, but only if the handling and storage method is safe and practical every time.
