PVC vs Hypalon / CSM: Which Tube Material?

The single decision most likely to determine whether your tender lasts five years or fifteen in Australian sun.

The short version

PVC is cheaper, lighter, easier to weld and perfectly adequate in temperate conditions with a cover. CSM (widely known by the former trade name Hypalon) costs more, weighs more and lasts dramatically longer under sustained UV and heat.

If your tender lives on davits in Queensland, the Kimberley or the Whitsundays and is uncovered, this is not a close call.

Construction matters too

  • Thermo-welded seams (common on modern PVC) are strong and consistent.
  • Glued CSM seams are field-repairable almost anywhere in the world — a real advantage when cruising remotely.
  • 1100 Decitex and 1000-denier fabric specifications indicate a serious boat rather than a pool toy.
  • Whatever the material, a cover is the cheapest life extension you can buy.
