30-second answer
Pressure, sunlight, detergent and neglected valves determine tube life long before the first major puncture.

Start with pressure
Tube pressure changes with air and water temperature. A boat inflated hard on a cool morning can become over-pressurised in full sun, while a correctly filled boat may feel soft after entering cold water.
Use the builder's specified pressure and a compatible gauge. Do not diagnose a leak from a single temperature change.
Routine care
- Rinse salt, sand and fish residue with fresh water before storage.
- Use products approved for the tube material; aggressive solvents and household cleaners can damage coatings and adhesive.
- Fit a cover when the tender lives outdoors, particularly in northern Australian UV.
- Keep fuel, oils, sharp fishing gear and hot exhaust components away from the tubes.
- Inspect transom bonds, rubbing strakes, handles, valves and underside seams every month in regular use.
Finding a slow leak
- Bring every chamber to its specified pressure under stable temperature conditions.
- Check valve caps, valve bodies and seams with a mild soapy-water solution.
- Mark bubbles with a removable pencil and rinse the solution away.
- If pressure falls across adjacent chambers or around the transom, use a professional repairer rather than treating it as a simple puncture.
Repair or replace?
Small accessible punctures can often be repaired correctly when the fabric type and adhesive system are known. Widespread coating failure, brittle PVC, separating seams or movement at the transom indicate a larger structural problem. Obtain a written repair assessment and compare it with replacement-tube availability before investing further.
